The College of Chemical Engineering and Materials was established on May 21, 2015, integrating two first-level disciplines, i.e., Chemical Engineering & Technology and Materials Science and Engineering. The former was developed from the Salt Industry Chemical Engineering established in 1953 and the latter from Plastic Engineering in 1958. Of these two disciplines, the Salt Industry Chemical Engineering is renowned as the "Whampoa of Salt Industry", and Polymer Materials and Engineering (formerly plastic Engineering) was approved by the former Ministry of Light Industry as the sole ministerial key discipline in Light Industry System. At present, the College of Chemical Engineering and Materials has become one of best colleges in terms of overall strength at our university.

The college has two departments, that is, Chemical Engineering and Materials. The Department of Chemical Engineering has four teaching and research sections, namely Chemical Engineering Course teaching, Chemical Engineering Practice, Chemical Engineering Graduation Design and Chemical Principles. The Department of Materials has three teaching and research sections, namely Material Teaching, Material Practice and Material Graduation Design. The college has 158 faculties, including 92 full professors, 43 doctoral supervisors and 87 master supervisors. Some honors are listed as following:

The college has one post-doctoral research station in the discipline of "Chemical Engineering and Technology", one first-level doctoral degree authorization program of "Chemical Engineering and Technology", two first-level master degree authorization programs of "Chemical Engineering and Technology" and "Materials Science and Engineering", and the professional degree authorization field of "Materials and Chemical Engineering". Our college is the only one authorized with the first-level doctoral degree of "Chemical Engineering and Technology" among the municipal universities in Tianjin. The college has 4 undergraduate majors of Chemical Engineering and Process, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Applied Chemistry and Material Chemistry. The major of Chemical Engineering and Technology is renowned as the national first-class professional construction point, Tianjin advantage and characteristic major, Tianjin brand major, and has passed the engineering education professional certification of the Ministry of Education. The major of Polymer Materials and Engineering is the national first-class professional construction point and Tianjin brand major. Among them, the first-level discipline of "Chemical Engineering and Technology" is the key discipline of Tianjin, and "New Chemical Materials" and "Comprehensive Utilization of offshore seawater Resources and Environmental Protection" are selected into the characteristic discipline group of Tianjin service industry.

In 2024, the polymer discipline of our college is ranked the 15th in the global U.S. News list, increasing 6 compared to 21 last year. Meanwhile, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science disciplines are both listed in U.S. News, with the former ranking 244th and the latter 550th. In addition, according to the 2024 ranking of Chemical Engineering and Technology among Chinese universities, the discipline of Chemical Engineering and Technology of Tianjin University of Science and Technology is among the top 30%, ranking 48th. The discipline was rated B +, ranking 66th in the Shanghai Ranking’s China University Rankings.

Over the past five years, the college has taken up nearly 500 projects at various levels, with an average annual scientific research fund over 30 million RMB. Among these projects, 40 are at national level and 73 entrusted by enterprises valuing more than one million RMB. The faculities of our college has published more than 600 scientific publications, 256 Chinese authorized invention patents and 22 international ones. As the first affiliation, the college has won the following awards:

Three first prizes and two second prizes of Tianjin Science and Technology Progress;

Two Tianjin Patent Gold Awards and Four Excellence Awards;

One second prize of Tianjin Natural Science Award;

Two first prizes, one second prize and one third prize of China Light Industry Federation;

One first prize of Science and Technology Award of China Federation of Commerce.

The college has built a number of teaching and scientific platforms, including National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for Supercritical Environment Engineering Technology, Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education of Marine Resources Chemistry and Food Technology, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Brine Chemical Engineering and Resource Eco-utilization, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Port Chemical Risk Factor of Multiple Identification, Tianjin "Belt and Road" China-Europe Joint Trenchless Technology Research Center, Key Laboratory of China Federation of Salt Producing and Salt Chemical Engineering, Tianjin Marine Chemical Technology Engineering Center, China Light Industry High Saline Water Resource Recycling Engineering Technology Research Center, Tianjin Marine Chemical Industry Teaching Demonstration Center, Tianjin Chemical Basic Municipal Experimental Teaching Center, etc.

 Active in strengthening academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation at both domestic and international levels, the college is successful in holding academic and industrial exchange activities, like "Advanced International Academic Exchange on Salt Lake and Salts" and "National Salt Innovation and Development Forum". At present, the college has established cooperative relations in the aspects of exchange program of graduate students and young teachers with the University of Western Ontario in Canada, the University of Lappeenranta in Finland, University of Fukui in Japan, Mupo University in Korea, the University of Leicester in the UK and other foreign universities. Over the years, the quality of the talent training in the college has gained wide social recognition, and the graduates of the college are favored by employers. A number of alumni have become elites from all walks of life, making contributions to the Chinese socialist modernization.
